Year of the Dragon

A still life inspired by a dragon sculpture my parents bought me in Key West. Last year my firends and I noticed that the dragon made the shape of the year 2000, and we wondered if it ment anything. Upon looking it up we found out that it did. Turns out the Year 2000 was the year of the Dragon in Chinese culture, and so the still life collection began! Everything here with the exception of a few Japanese inspired drinks and writing (mostly cause I kept forgeting which it was, Japanese or Chinese) is Chinese inspired.

Things in the Picture I own:
- Dragon
- Wooden Box
-Candle

Comments and helpful critique are as always very much incouraged =]

Firstly, let me just say that this is an amazing piece of artwork and I not only love it for the wonderful eye candy it gives but simply because I own a similar dragon sculpture (and i think you've captured the style beautifully!).

So, Lets start with vision shall we? I like the sketchy style you've chosen here, not quite crisp or defined, but definitely closer to a realistic and more subtle image. The reflextion on the table of all the items upon it works out wonderfully, and the whole combonation of this image between realism and differently is very nicely portrayed! Light source wise you know where the main part of it is, and you're not affraid to use references to see how it reacts to other objects (like reflecting softly off of the table to the bottom of the dragon sculpture).
You've done a great job with all the different textures of all the different items here, especially with the green glass bottle, the candle, the lamp and of course, the dragon. Colour wise I absolutely LOVE how you've used such a strong contrast of yellows, oranges, reds and even the green (I want to say wine) bottle to break up or combine/illuminate specific areas.

Its sad to say that we don't normally see people taking things from their daily life and actually doing a picture of it anymore. More or less people forget about their references. So for originality I'd have to say you did a stand up job. Not that its mind blowingly original, obviously its been done before, but that its refreshing.

Your technique is beautiful! It suits your style, it expresses the image, and as i've said above, you're not affraid to use references. You have a good grasp of how to do solid glossy items, so to widen your knowledge, you could look into wodden items or wood patterns, for more realism.

The overall impact of this amazing image is just that! I find it amazing, beautiful, eye catching and pleasing, warm, serious, and reassuringly safe!
